Not that I’d have been able to contribute anything any more worthwhile: “the sound” can be an awfully foggy thing to try and talk about. But it does seem to me like the point of significance with this song — the part that amazes collegiate stoners and horrifies Lex, the thing that maybe draws some line between “I get the beauty of this” and “I don’t get the beauty of this” that is important to someone, somewhere. The experience of clicking over from not-seeing-it to seeing-it. I worry occasionally that it’s easy for some of us, as critics, to float above that sort of thing and find larger arguments. (It’s certainly easy for me; I am past the point of getting any really huge or profound sonic surprise out of “My Girls,” but I also generally think that’s too bad.) I’m also fairly sure that what matters to many people about the sonics of this thing is not unlike when I used to play what I considered “poppy” music at an old job and people would ask if it was supposed to be music or if something was wrong with the stereo or what, and sometimes it was even something that I required some moment of clicking over to seeing-it to appreciate in the first place.

Saying “There is no ‘broader culture’ to have a sense about” is sort of missing the point, in that like the existence of God, what matters is whether or not people ACT as if there’s a broader culture to have a sense about.

(The analogy isn’t perfect, since the existence of a broader culture is testable, and also since if enough people act like a broader culture exists, then it kind of does - which isn’t true of God unless you subscribe to some fairly esoteric philosophies.)

Just listened to Melvyn Bragg discussing Logical Positivism so I’m slightly wary about this being on the testable tip. However, this feels like a massive post to me and the truth of it is definitely speeding up the trajectory I’m on. I’ve been checking the Billboard charts almost “religiously” now for past 2 months. It really does have an overall effect of pushing me from time into space when I go out at night around here. Also, girls appreciate the extra effort. :)

Alexis de Tocqueville remarked in his Recollections of the period that “society was cut in two: those who had nothing united in common envy, and those who had anything united in common terror.”

Germania is a painting by Philipp Veit created in March 1848 during the Revolutions of 1848. It was used as an allegoric decoration in the National Assembly in Frankfurt’s Paulskirche, where it concealed the organ. It was meant as a symbol of a united democratic Germany and remained a national personification until the end of World War I.
